I really don’t listen to country music. I promise. Yet, here I am, posting yet another country song for you: Trace Adkins’ “You’re Gonna Miss This”.
Being a top-hit right now, this song has probably already made its way into your “cliche country song” category, but it’s new to me. The third verse of this song was playing on the radio at the doctor’s office two times this week as I (in high heels, no less) lugged Lia’s car seat and juggled diaper bag, insurance cards, and umbrella. Sometimes I’m sure that God must have his finger on the radio, mixing the soundtrack of my life as I climb in and out of the car, enter grocery stores, and look for the ECB deals at CVS.
I appreciate the reminder to savor these “by-5-p.m.-I’m-pooped” days with my sweethearts.
She was staring out the window of their SUV
Complaning, saying “I can’t wait to turn 18”
She said “I’ll make my own money, and I’ll make my own rules”
Mamma put the car in park out there in front of the school
Then she kissed her head and said “I was just like you”
You’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna want this back
You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you’re gonna miss this
Before she knows it she’s a brand new bride
In a one-bedroom apartment, and her daddy stops by
He tells her “It’s a nice place”
She says “It’ll do for now”
Starts talking about babies and buying a house
Daddy shakes his head and saysAnd s “Baby, just slow down”
Cause you’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna want this back
You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you’re gonna miss this
Five years later there’s a plumber workin’ on the water heater
Dog’s barkin’, phone’s ringin’
One kid’s cryin’, one kid’s screamin’
And she keeps apologizin’
He says “They don’t bother me.
I’ve got 2 babies of my own.
One’s 36, one’s 23.
Huh, it’s hard to believe, but…
You’re gonna miss this
You’re gonna want this back
You’re gonna wish these days hadn’t gone by so fast
These are some good times
So take a good look around
You may not know it now
But you’re gonna miss this”

Perhaps you should give country music a try! I like it so much because there are a lot of meaningful songs like this one out there. This is one of my recent favorites and makes me get all choked up when I hear it. Thanks for typing out the lyrics, I’ve been wanting to read all of them through!
Love ya!
your country lovin’ sister!
It’s new to me too, and darned if I’m not crying right now!
The man is a country and western prophet! He’s right about all of it!
I think his wife gave him some tips when he wrote this song… he just understands a momma’s heart too well.
Mmmm. I really like this song, too. The fleetingnees of life has been so evident to me lately as I pack up a room that I lived in for a year…
Oh, yeah…so true!
Em – oh, I remember how strange that all seemed… for four years, moving in and moving out…
I meant to let you know about another song very similar to this one by Kenny Chesney – “Don’t Blink”. You should listen to it…
ooo, Thanks, Jul! Maybe I’ll become a country music lover afterall… 🙂
